June 3rd deadline pushed back until the end of summer
The planned opening of Germany’s new Berlin Brandenburg airport has been pushed back due to fire and safety concerns, it has emerged.
The project will eventually replace Berlin’s ageing Tegel and Schönefeld airports, and serve as the city’s primary airport. It was originally planned to open on 3rd June, but Mayor Klaus Wowereit said the date now looked more likely to be in August.
The news will come as a major inconvenience to passengers who have already booked new schedules which had been planned to operate out of Brandenburg with effect from June 3. There was also major uproar from the aviation industry, since the delay will pose immense logistical problems and costs for airlines that will now have to reaccomodate passengers.
