Charred ground cannot easily absorb water
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is warning residents of the Western US (Nevada, California, Washington, Oregon, Montana, and Idaho) to prepare for increased flood risk over the Winter.
Scientists predict that parts of the western United States could see a wetter-than-average winter.
“Recovering after a flood can be overwhelming. With flood insurance, you have the financial support to get back on your feet as quickly as possible. Too often, people mistakenly think flood damage is covered by a homeowner's policy.

In addition, FEMA also warned residents of California, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, Montana, and Idaho of an even greater risk of flooding this year due to excessive summer and fall wildfires that burned across the States. The charred and denuded ground in these areas cannot easily absorb rainwater, thus increasing the likelihood of flooding and mudslides.
David Maurstad, assistant administrator of mitigation and federal insurance administrator for FEMA, said: "Recovering after a flood can be overwhelming. With flood insurance, you have the financial support to get back on your feet as quickly as possible. Too often, people mistakenly think flood damage is covered by a homeowner's policy. Flood coverage must be purchased separately, and there is typically a 30-day waiting period before a new flood insurance policy becomes effective."
