John Ludlow, Intercontinental Hotels Group
Choose three adjectives to describe yourself
I love words - you are not going to get away with three! On the upside I would say I was: a visionary, bold and optimistic, challenging, empowering and forgiving, and structured and logical. On the downside I can: be over concerned with trying to please everyone, set over-stretching plans, and get frustrated with poor delivery and exhibit my Anglo Saxon heritage!

A serious hotel fire which results in multi-fatalities in a part of the world where the local emergency infrastructure is weak

The issue that concerns me most outside of work and family is the lack of understanding and love our community has for the value of life and our too often apparent unwillingness to compromise our expectations for the sake of others

“What’s your worst risk nightmare?A serious hotel fire which results in multi-fatalities in a part of the world where the local emergency infrastructure is weak.
My training was in business and hospitality, pubs, restaurants and hotels. I wish that I had taken a formal risk management training when I got into risk management rather than learning everything on the job

The people I work with, the value of our work in making and keeping our staff, guests and business safe, and creating wealth to provide for the family

Talk with my wife Fiona, call my parents, have a beer and sleep!
What are you most proud of having achieved?
A great environment for my kids, Tess and Mark, to grow-up in - a joint effort with my Fiona. My part in the development of several chains of pubs and restaurants - Toby was probably the best of these. Two risk management departments, one in what is now M&B and one in IHG for EMEA. I am currently globalising IHG risk management - we are well on the way to forming a ‘Team of Teams’ around the world!
