The deadly storm said to be more damaging than 1999 tornado

A powerful tornado ripped through towns near Oklahoma City for the second day running on 21 May, leaving many dead and injured.

Winds of up to 200mph were generated on Monday, according to the US National Weather Service.

The worst-affected area was the town of Moore, south of the Oklahoma City, where neighbourhoods and schools were destroyed, according to the BBC.

Moore had previously suffered a severe tornado in May 1999 - with the highest winds ever recorded - but Oklahoma Highway Patrol spokesperson Betsy Randolph told a local news station that the damage on Monday appeared greater than the 1999 tornado.

At the time of writing, US officials said at least 91 people, including 20 children, were feared dead.

The tornadoes first struck on Sunday when at least two people were reported dead and 21 were injured, according to the BBC.
