Medical plans discriminate against unmarried couples.
Many private medical plans discriminate against unmarried couples, according to a survey of 527 company-sponsored plans conducted by consultants William M Mercer. Over half the plans restrict cover to legally-married couples, with only 48% permitting membership by common-law spouses and only 44 % allowing cover for same-sex partners.
“Surprisingly, a number of plans appear to be out of tune with current trends,” said Steve Clements, Partner at William M Mercer. “As things stand, many employers could be accused of acting unjustly. However, with the increasing emphasis on equal treatment, there are signs that companies are starting to address the issue.”
