Insurer responds to increased liabilities arising from the Environmental Liability Directive
XL Insurance boosted environmental coverage under its general liability policies issued in the UK.
The Clean-Up Costs & Environmental Liability Directive endorsement is designed to give companies enhanced environmental liability protection in conjunction with a General Liability policy, said the insurer.
It provides cover for up to £1m against environmental liabilities including on- and offsite cleanup costs for gradual as well as sudden and accidental pollution events for operations within the European Union.
“It is important that risk managers understand their full environmental exposures to find the best solution for their needs.

The endorsement also covers emergency costs and liabilities arising from the recently introduced Environmental Liability Directive.
Simon White, environmental branch manager for XL Insurance, added: ‘Companies' potential liabilities have drastically increased with the Environmental Liability Directive becoming law in England earlier this month. It is important that risk managers understand their full environmental exposures to find the best solution for their needs.’
