Businesses at ‘significant’ risk as Mexico fights drug war

Mexico’s troubled social landscape is putting businesses at significant risk as the country struggles to win the war of drugs.

A new report warns that the upcoming July regional elections combined with the escalating security situation is causing concern for businesses operating in the region.

The report by Maplecroft said: “The country’s troubled security situation will continue to pose a significant challenge to doing business in the country, posing reputational, legal and operational risks to company personnel and assets.”

“Security remains at the top of the new government’s agenda, but President Enrique Pena Nieto is unlikely to be able to bring about significant changes in the short to medium term.”

It also warns companies to be aware of human rights violations due to the military’s involvement in combating organised crime.
