Insurance covers illegal hunters legal costs and expenses
A League Against Cruel Sports (LACS) investigation has revealed that high-street bank HSBC insures hunters against prosecution under the Hunting Act 2004.
The chairman of the LACS John Cooper has written to the bank to seek assurances that they will not cover and pay the costs of those convicted of a criminal act.
It is understood that the legal policy provided by HSBC covers not only damage from hunting packs that are not under control or trespass and damage to private property but also legal expenses of those brought to trial and convicted under the Hunting Act 2004.
John Cooper said: “We are shocked that HSBC would provide a policy to hunts that have been convicted of hunting illegally. Time again the hunts show a complete disregard for the communities that they literally ride roughshod over. Is HSBC prepared to say that they are happy to underwrite their anti-social behaviour?”
Quoted in the Times Online, Alastair Jackson, director of the Masters of Foxhounds Association, said: “Hunts can get legal fees insurance from any number of firms. It’s a perfectly normal sort of insurance.”
