Thinking of taking a business trip to the US? Well not until you’ve checked out this interactive gun crime risk map from the Guardian Datablog website.
It shows the most up-to-date statistics on firearm murders by US state.
California is the riskiest state for gun crime with 953 handgun murders in 2010, according to the data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). That means there were 357 killings per 100,000 people—the highest murder rate in the US.
America has serious problems with gun crime but still a significant proportion of the population is against overly-burdensome gun laws. The right to bear arms is enshrined in the US Constitution.
Behind California: Texas and New York are the two other gun crime risk hotspots.
