Risk management has never been so important, and AIRMIC members have never been so active. Visits to the AIRMIC website nearly doubled during 2001, but peaked dramatically during September when www.airmic.com had well over 5,250 visitors. Attendance at AIRMIC meetings has also been noticeably higher, and the frequency of meetings has increased.
AIRMIC has created new Special Interest Groups (SIGs) for charities, utilities, and, of particular significance, for business continuity issues. One of the busiest has been AIRMIC’s aviation and travel SIG, whose members have faced extreme difficulties in getting cover from the insurance market.
This increased interest in risk management skills and knowledge is reflected in other ways. For example, bookings were high for the AIRMIC annual lecture given by Sir Howard Davies, chairman of the FSA on 29 January. Last year, new membership was well up, and AIRMIC membership is now represented in more than 75% of the companies listed in the FT100.
AIRMIC chairman Philip Thomas believes that networking is one of the most successful risk management tools being used at present. “Meeting colleagues to discuss the current risk situation and latest market developments is something AIRMIC has been actively promoting.
