The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has had far-reaching consequences across all sectors, but the furniture industry has proven to be one of the most resilient. Here’s how the key players are adapting to become core suppliers across Europe

At a time when global supply chains are being tested, and geopolitical uncertainties are casting a shadow over Europe, Ukraine’s furniture industry has demonstrated the importance of reslience and flexibility.

As the war continues to impact the region, the industry has emerged as a surprising and compelling story of adaptability and strength.

Manufacturing

Defying the odds, Ukraine’s furniture manufacturers have successfully navigated logistical challenges, shifted production routes, and maintained their position in key European markets.

And now, the Ukrainian Export Alliance (UEA), a collective of Ukraine’s most innovative and resilient furniture manufacturers, is set to make a powerful statement at the Brussels Furniture Fair 2024.

As the industry faces unprecedented geopolitical challenges, the UEA brands are proving their resilience. With a focus on expanding into global markets, the alliance includes industry leaders like Tivoli, DUB, DNIPROWOOD, MEBUS, Lamella.ua, SM, BJORN, Woodsoft, and SKLO.

“Despite our country’s immense challenges, the Ukrainian furniture industry continues to innovate, grow, and impact the global stage. We’re proud to showcase the craftsmanship and creativity of Ukraine, demonstrating that even in difficult times, we can build a future defined by excellence”, said Julia Lisovska, commercial Director at Tivoli.

RESILIENCE IN THE FACE OF GEOPOLITICAL CHALLENGES

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has had far-reaching consequences across all sectors, but the furniture industry has proven to be one of the most resilient.

Despite interruptions in the supply of critical raw materials and the rerouting of exports due to the war, Ukrainian manufacturers have continued to export to Europe, where 96% of their products are destined.

Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Belgium, Italy, Netherlands, Great Britain, and many others remain critical markets for Ukrainian furniture, with manufacturers turning geopolitical adversity into an opportunity to redefine their processes and strengthen their supply chains.

Tivoli, DUB, DNIPROWOOD, and others within the Ukrainian Export Alliance have adopted agile strategies to manage the volatile environment.

One of the key advantages of the Ukrainian furniture industry is its access to abundant natural resources. Ukraine is rich in timber, particularly oak, beech, and ash, which allows manufacturers like DUB and DNIPROWOOD to create sustainable, FSC-certified products that meet Europe’s stringent environmental standards.

However, Ukrainian companies had to adapt quickly as the war cut off traditional supply routes from Russia and Belarus for materials such as plywood and glass. By shifting sourcing to alternative suppliers in Europe and investing in innovative technologies, they ensured minimal disruption to their production capabilities.

For instance, MEBUS, one of Ukraine’s top upholstery furniture brands, has leveraged advanced production techniques to create a wide range of eco-friendly pieces. Thanks to high-tech machinery, the company can produce customisable designs at scale, positioning it as a critical player in residential and commercial markets.

A SHIFT IN GLOBAL MANUFACTURING: THE UKRAINIAN ADVANTAGE

Global manufacturing is transforming, with supply chains from Asia increasingly scrutinised for their environmental impact and longer delivery times. Ukraine’s proximity to European markets and highly competitive labour costs have become distinct advantages.

As such, Ukrainian furniture brands are now viewed as sustainable alternatives to Chinese and Southeast Asian suppliers, especially regarding contract manufacturing for European companies.

Brands like BJORN, specialising in customisable chairs and lounge furniture, have benefited from this shift. With over 150 partner stores across Europe, BJORN’s flexible production capabilities make it a favored choice for businesses looking to customise furniture without the environmental burden of long-distance shipping.

Sustainability is no longer a buzzword—it’s an imperative, and Ukrainian manufacturers have embraced this challenge wholeheartedly.

Lamella.ua, focusing on Scandinavian-inspired design, is one such brand that uses only eco-friendly, FSC-certified wood for its production. Using bio-oils, waxes, and natural adhesives ensures their products last longer and align with global trends toward sustainable living.

Meanwhile, SM (Svit Mebliv—Ukraine), one of Ukraine’s largest furniture manufacturers, has continued to expand its operations despite the challenging economic environment. Its full-cycle production facilities and commitment to modernisation have enabled it to continue producing high-quality home furniture and orthopedic mattresses, cementing its status as a reliable supplier for European markets.

As Ukraine’s furniture industry looks to the future, the Brussels Furniture Fair is pivotal in expanding its global reach. Ukrainian manufacturers are proving their ability to withstand geopolitical turmoil and positioning themselves as leaders in sustainable and innovative design.

By capitalising on their geographical proximity to Europe, their skilled labor force, and their abundant natural resources, Ukrainian furniture manufacturers are hoping to redefine the global furniture market.
